The Carroll Shelby Collection

Hot Wheels is launching a new car series: the Carroll Shelby Collection, dedicated to the legendary automobiles crafted throughout Carroll Shelby’s iconic career, with the goal of reinterpreting Shelby’s heritage through a modern, minimalist packaging design that preserves the brand’s premium, performance-driven identity. This series features fully illustrated backer cards, beginning with the 1966 Shelby AC Cobra, where the challenge was to introduce a fresh visual perspective while maintaining Hot Wheels’ recognizable tone, authenticity, and collector-focused legacy.

Project Overview

Challenge

Design packaging that was structurally sound, visually engaging, and aligned with Hot Wheels’ recognizable branding. Ensuring proper weight support, durability, and accurate Pantone colour translation were key functional and visual challenges.

Strategy

Built a custom backer card layout using precise measurements to ensure real-world functionality. Developed a clean, illustration-driven design using Gestalt principles and cohesive colour relationships to create a premium, unified visual identity.

Take Aways

Strengthened skills in structural packaging design, Pantone colour selection, and designing for real-world production. Gained experience balancing functional constraints with strong visual storytelling and brand consistency.
